This paper discusses the enhancement of power quality through the use of a single-switch AC-DC converter. The objective is to analyze techniques for improving power factor correction (PFC) in low-power applications while minimizing current distortion. A comprehensive exploration of converter designs operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is presented, showcasing the advantages of employing simple structures to achieve effective PFC. The methodology involves examining various combinations of inductors and capacitors used in single-switch topologies, along with the implementation of open-loop pulse-width modulation (PWM) for better regulation of output voltage. Results indicate that these converters are capable of reducing input harmonics and producing a sinusoidal input current, which is essential for consumer electronics. The findings highlight the efficacy of such simple converters in enhancing overall power quality with minimal environmental impact. This research contributes to the ongoing development of straightforward and efficient solutions for power factor improvement in electronic devices.
