Proper preparation of metallographic specimens is essential for accurately determining their microstructure and composition. This experiment aims to familiarize students with the step-by-step process involved in preparing metallographic specimens, which includes sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching, and microscopic examination. Each student is tasked with preparing and analyzing samples of brass, steel, and aluminum, as well as eutectoid steel and eutectoid Pb-Sn samples. By following meticulous preparation protocols, the integrity of the microstructures is preserved, allowing for accurate observations and conclusions. The study also emphasizes the importance of maintaining cleanliness and precision throughout the preparation process to avoid alterations in microstructure that might lead to erroneous results. Various techniques such as optical microscopy and advanced methods, which may include electron microscopy and x-ray diffractometry, are highlighted for specimen examination. Results from the examination will contribute to the understanding of how different alloy compositions influence microstructure and properties, culminating in examinations of ASTM grain size numbers for the specimens. This hands-on experience is fundamental in imparting practical skills in metallography to engineering students.
