This study investigates the precipitation of copper from an acid solution using sodium sulphide as a precipitation agent. The solution contained 17 g/l copper and 350 g/l sulfuric acid. Optical microscopy revealed a particle size of nearly 1 µm in the sulphide sludge sample, while chemical and X-ray diffraction analyses indicated covellite as the main sulphide mineral. A batch bioleach amenability test was conducted at 32 °C utilizing a mesophilic mixed culture from the Tk31 mine, with a residence time of 28 days. Results demonstrated promising dissolution of copper sulphide through direct catalytic leaching facilitated by bacteria. To enhance bacterial activity and the redox potential of the culture, small quantities of ferrous ions were added. The bioleach test lasted 22 days, resulting in a copper extraction rate of 95 %, complemented by a copper concentration of 15 g/l in the bioleach solution. The slope of the extraction curve indicated a solubilisation rate of 1.1 g/l per day. Overall, the findings suggest that a 95 % copper extraction could potentially be achieved within 13.6 days, presuming the use of a three-stage bioreactor system.
