Abstract

Language:

This study presents a comprehensive mathematical optimization of fluid flow in a tundish water model, both with and without flow control devices, specifically weirs and dams. The employed methodology utilized the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT 6.0, integrating the k-epsilon two-equation turbulence model to simulate turbulent flow conditions effectively. The research focused on analyzing residence time distribution (RTD) curves to evaluate flow behavior within the tundish. Various geometric configurations were tested, including a bare tundish, one with a weir, and one equipped with both a weir and dam. The results highlighted the significance of flow modifiers in enhancing the flotation of nonmetallic inclusions in steel. Among the configurations analyzed, the tundish designed with both a weir and dam emerged as the most effective and optimal geometric arrangement for achieving desired flow characteristics and minimizing inclusions. This research demonstrates the critical role of proper flow control in continuous casting processes, with the potential for improved steel quality through optimized tundish design.
