Since 1973, Bamangwato Concessions Limited (BCL) has operated a nickel-copper smelter in Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana, treating concentrates from local and custom feed mines. The objective of this research was to improve the economic and environmental performance of the smelter, particularly addressing the challenges of low nickel feed grade in its primary concentrate. To achieve this, advanced metallurgical modeling techniques were developed and utilized in collaboration with Xstrata Process Support (XPS) to identify production bottlenecks, manage slag volumes, and calculate recoveries of nickel, copper, and cobalt. The methodology involved extensive data collection and feasibility analyses for key unit operations in the smelting process. Results indicated significant opportunities for increasing custom feed capacity and optimizing the overall production efficiency of the BCL smelter. The findings highlight the importance of process modeling in enhancing economic outcomes while addressing environmental concerns associated with metallurgical operations.
