An assessment is made of the possible scope for the use of activated charcoal as the solid adsorbent in an upflow fluidized-bed contactor, and a pilot-plant programme for the recovery of low concentrations of dissolved gold in this contactor is described. The study reveals that it is achievable to produce an effluent containing less than 0.01 p.p.m. of dissolved gold, indicating the effectiveness of activated charcoal in such applications. The historical context of activated charcoal's use in gold recovery and the advancements in techniques that allow for its re-use highlight its significance in the field of metallurgy. The methodology employed involved evaluating the stripping process of loaded charcoal and assessing the operational feasibility of the process under industrial conditions. This investigation not only demonstrates the potential for minimizing gold losses in effluent but also emphasizes the economic viability of utilizing regenerated activated charcoal in gold recovery processes. The findings suggest a promising alternative approach to traditional methods of gold recovery that can lead to cost savings and improved environmental outcomes.
