Abstract

Language:

The City of Chicago has a world-renowned skyline and is known for its provocative architecture, supported predominantly by caissons or drilled shafts. Despite significant advancements in drilled shaft technology, specialty geotechnical construction techniques like micropiles are also prevalent in Chicago, being employed to underpin historic structures such as Orchestra Hall. This paper discusses the effective use of drilled shafts, micropiles, and ground improvement over the last 30 years within the Chicago area, drawing from a curated collection of case histories. It examines the challenges faced by engineers in dealing with compromised or inadequate caisson foundations, where micropiles ranging from 200 to 600 kips have been critical in ensuring stability. Furthermore, the paper aims to explore ways to advance the geotechnical industry beyond its current limitations through the adoption of these innovative techniques. This comprehensive overview not only highlights the historical significance of Chicago's construction methods but also provides insight into future geotechnical engineering practices in urban landscapes.
