Abstract

Language:

This work is focused on demonstrating the overall adequacy of procedures implemented in a Brazilian laboratory for conducting k0-standardized neutron activation analysis (NAA). The objective was to evaluate the concentrations of 29 elements determined in certified reference materials of plants and geological matrices. The methodology involved analyzing samples in batches of up to 100, considering constraints such as the location of the neutron source, which is 160 km away from the laboratory, and the varied neutron flux conditions arising from different irradiation positions. The results indicated that most of the values obtained were in good agreement with reference data, and no consistent bias could be attributed to the analytical system in use. However, concerns were raised regarding the uncertainties associated with the certification of some reference materials, especially for elements like Ag, Br, Rb, and U. Overall, this study validates the effectiveness of analyzing certified reference materials under reproducible conditions while highlighting the need for further investigation into the analytical system components and the degree of accuracy of the k0-constant.
