Hydrodynamic characteristics of fluidization in conical or tapered beds differ from those in columnar beds due to the variation of superficial velocity in the axial direction of the beds. In the former, fixed and fluidized regions could coexist and the sharp peaking of the pressure drop results in significant differences in performance parameters. This study aims to investigate the fluidization behavior of a ternary mixture in a tapered bed, providing a detailed analysis of the hydrodynamic phenomena involved. The methodology employed involved experimental setups to measure various parameters such as pressure drop, bed expansion, and particle velocity across different flow rates and bed configurations. The results indicate that the tapered bed provides enhanced fluidization efficiency and stability compared to traditional columnar beds, evidenced by lower pressure drops and improved particle distribution throughout the bed. Furthermore, the interaction effects between the gas and solid phases were critically analyzed under various operating conditions, leading to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms governing gas-solid flow in tapered configurations. This research contributes valuable insights into the design and optimization of fluidized bed reactors in chemical engineering applications.
