The purpose of this review paper is to offer an examination of reactive power management in power systems. Reactive power is essential for planning and operations aimed at improving voltage and mitigating voltage instability in power networks. This paper identifies potential methods for reactive power compensation through voltage control, contributing to enhanced stability and increased transmission capacity within power systems. It discusses the effective management of reactive power and steady state voltage in distribution systems by optimizing the available voltage and reactive power control equipment. The review begins with an overview of voltage stability and reactive power in transmission, distribution, and load sectors, highlighting the importance of local reactive power delivery. Various management strategies for shunt power systems, such as Static VAR Compensators (SVC) and STATCOM-type systems, are examined, alongside static reactive power generators and hybrid solutions integrating both. These strategies offer valuable insights into enhancing the reliability and efficiency of power system operations.
