Arsenic, a prevalent contaminant in copper processing, poses significant environmental risks, particularly at the aging Bor smelter plant in Serbia. This study examines the sources and implications of arsenic emissions from copper smelting operations, framed within the context of the historical significance and modern technological challenges faced by the facility. Through a comprehensive analysis of current practices and pollutants, it was determined that Bor's reliance on outdated technologies, such as the reverberatory furnace, continues to exacerbate arsenic release during the roasting and smelting of copper concentrates. The results indicate that arsenic levels, coupled with the presence of high-concentration minerals like enargite in ore deposits, contribute to the hazardous emissions and potential economic repercussions linked to the processing methods employed. Given the socio-economic ramifications associated with the plant's closure, along with the vast copper reserves in the region, this research highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices and modernized technologies to mitigate environmental impacts while addressing industry viability. This work aims to provide valuable insights for stakeholders involved in mining, metallurgy, and environmental management efforts.
