We report the observation of enhanced coherent Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) at terahertz (THz) frequencies from a train of picosecond bunches of 15 MeV electrons passing above a grating. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the intensity enhancement of SPR, which surpasses other radiation sources like transition radiation by a factor determined by the number of grating periods. Using a methodology that involves the analysis of electron bunches that are shorter than the radiation wavelength, we characterize the coherent emission enhanced by the number of electrons in the bunch. Our results present the first observation of this type of SPR exhibiting enhancements proportional to the number of grating periods, bunches, and electrons. Furthermore, this powerful SPR THz radiation can be detected with a high signal-to-noise ratio using a heterodyne receiver, confirming the effectiveness of the approach in generating high power, coherent THz radiation.
