Abstract

Language:

The processing of nickel-copper mattes and converter mattes at nickel plants involves a series of operations including pressure oxidative leaching (POX), solvent extraction (SX), electrowinning (EW), cobalt recovery, and solutions purification. This study focuses on the leaching of copper cake (Cu-cake), a by-product rich in valuable metals, using a method that combines atmospheric and pressure leaching in sulfuric-acid solutions. The methodology was designed to achieve high copper extraction rates exceeding 98%, while minimizing metal losses in the leach residue, which contains precious metals and PGMs. A comprehensive analysis of the initial Cu-cake and an investigation into various process parameters (temperature ranging from 25 to 190°C and pressures from 0 to 7 bar) were conducted to determine the optimal leaching conditions. The results led to the development of a process block diagram for treating Cu-cake, illustrating the integration of this method into the existing POX-SX-EW circuit. The findings indicate that the proposed technology is efficient for maximizing copper recovery and streamlining the overall hydrometallurgical process.
