Abstract

Language:

Cyanide is a conventional lixiviant for gold extraction but its toxicity raises major environmental concerns. This paper examines the leaching characteristics of gold using hypochlorite solutions as a potential non-cyanide alternative. The methodology involves investigating the effects of hypochlorite concentration along with variables such as hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, and temperature on gold dissolution. Results indicate that gold dissolves at a significantly enhanced rate in hypochlorite solutions compared to traditional lixiviants. However, the presence of impurities necessitates high reagent quantities for effective gold extraction from ores under ambient conditions. In contrast, pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores in an autoclave at lower reagent levels facilitates rapid and complete extraction in a single stage, circumventing the need for additional cyanidation. This study's findings suggest that hypochlorite leaching could be a viable alternative method for gold recovery, potentially diminishing the environmental impact associated with traditional cyanide-based processes.
