During the Centennial year of the Hall-Heroult process discovery, this paper reviews developments in aluminum production in Canada, showcasing its role as a world center for primary aluminum. The objective is to analyze the historical context and economic factors contributing to this status. The methodology includes a historical overview of the process and its evolution in Canada since its discovery in 1886, detailing the first commercial production in Shawinigan in 1901 and subsequent facility developments across the country. Results indicate that Canada's hydro-electric resources have been instrumental in sustaining aluminum production and that while challenges such as rising labor and raw material costs exist, they have been partially offset by the advantages of low-cost energy. The findings suggest that the Hall-Heroult process remains dominant despite the emergence of sophisticated methods, highlighting the importance of modernized plants that adhere to environmental standards. The future outlook indicates continued operations in Canada due to favorable economic factors, even amidst competitive pressures from alternative production technologies.
