The major challenge for achieving a sustainable future for water resources and water security is the integration of water availability, water quality and water governance. Water is unevenly distributed on Planet Earth and these disparities are the cause of several economic, ecological and social differences in the societies of many countries and regions. As a consequence of human misuse, the growth of urbanization and soil degradation has led to continuous deterioration of water quality. Key components for maintaining water quantity and quality include vegetation cover of watersheds, demand reduction, and new governance approaches that encompass integrated management, predictive evaluation of impacts, and recognition of ecosystem services. The paper discusses the pressing need for future research to address these interconnected issues comprehensively, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices and policies that ensure water security in light of increasing human demands and environmental challenges.
