Lead is known to be venomous for human body systems including the nervous, digestive, and skeletal systems, even at low levels. The growing demand for safe, eco-friendly, and low-cost adsorbents for lead removal from contaminated water has spurred research into the development of affordable alternatives. This review outlines the fundamental principles of adsorption and discusses various adsorption processes. It explores the urgency of utilizing all possible sources for effective lead removal from industrial wastewater, given the significant toxicity posed to both aquatic and terrestrial life by lead contamination. The review consolidates existing studies on low-cost adsorbents and emphasizes the need for innovative solutions to mitigate lead's environmental impact. It aims to provide researchers and industry professionals with insights into effective methodologies and screening of materials that can significantly contribute to water purification efforts.
