This study examines a mishap section and other selected sections made from 17-7 precipitation hardening stainless steel, revealing an unusually large amount of retained austenite greater than 7%. The excessive retained austenite on the surface appears to have been produced during both the solution annealing and austenite conditioning steps of the heat treating process, although it was only revealed after the austenite conditioning step. It is suspected that these sections may have been exposed to a furnace atmosphere containing too much carbon or nitrogen during the heat treating process, which could have led to an increase in the amount of retained austenite both on the surface and internally. The metallurgical examination provides insight into the factors contributing to this microstructural condition, emphasizing the importance of controlling furnace atmospheres to avoid potentially detrimental effects on material properties.
