The rechargeable lithium ion (Li-ion) battery market was valued at $11.8 billion in 2011 and is projected to rise to $50 billion by 2020 due to increasing demand in consumer electronics and electric vehicles. The current recycling rates for Li-ion batteries are low, unlike lead-acid batteries, due to economic unfeasibility. To address this issue, we propose a novel low temperature methodology aimed at efficiently recycling Li-ion batteries irrespective of their cathode chemistries. Our methodology focuses on the recovery of cathode materials, the most valuable components of Li-ion batteries, from recycled materials. The results demonstrate that our recycling process achieves high recovery efficiency and is viable for commercial application, thus contributing to resource conservation and environmental sustainability. This study highlights the importance of developing effective recycling methods for Li-ion batteries to mitigate the environmental impact and leverage valuable resources.
