The National Solar Mission launched by the Government of India promotes the deployment of 20,000 GW of solar power by 2022, where Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plays a significant role. This study outlines the CRISPTower initiative, which develops solar power tower technology through collaboration between SunBorne Energy, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India, IMDEA Energy in Spain, and the Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) at the University of South Florida, USA. A 1MW thermal solar power system is currently being installed at the Solar Energy Center in Delhi, India. The project proposes the use of atmospheric air as the working fluid, achieving an exit temperature of about 600 °C from an innovative open volumetric metallic porous receiver. The heliostat design features a carousel type with a 150m² mirror surface area, while the thermal storage system utilizes a packed bed of rocks combined with metallic oxides as the sensible storage medium. An experimental study of thermal storage efficiency and pressure drop in various scenarios is ongoing, aimed at enhancing the numerical model for improved performance and efficiency of solar power generation systems.
