The prime objective of this research was to improve the mechanical properties of C300 maraging steels originally cast in the vacuum induction melting (VIM) and argon induction melting (AIM) furnaces by the application of the vacuum arc remelting (VAR) process. Two sets of C300 maraging steel with different amounts of Ti were cast in two different types of furnaces. Bars with varying Ti content were produced and subjected to the VAR process to analyze its effects on the reduction of nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) gases and inclusions, leading to enhancement in mechanical properties. The results indicated a total reduction of N and O gases in AIM-cast bars of up to 40%, alongside a reduction of inclusions by up to 30%, with improvements in ductility and impact energy of up to 40%. In contrast, bars cast in the VIM furnace showed a 12% decrease in total gas reduction, but ductility and impact energy increased by 30% and 47%, respectively. This study presents valuable insights for those exploring the implications of the VAR process on the mechanical characteristics of this specific type of cast steel.
