This study investigates the advancements in the management of radioactive waste recovery and enrichment within GE Healthcare's operations at the Cardiff site, where radiochemicals have been produced since the early 1980s. The primary objective was to significantly reduce radioactive discharges into the environment, compliant with the Radioactive Substances Act 1993's regulatory requirements and the OSPAR objectives for minimizing environmental impact. Methodologically, the study evaluated the proposed system combining water distillation and thermal diffusion, emphasizing operational simplicity and efficiency compared to traditional cryogenic processes. Results show that this integrated approach not only improves the safety and management of tritium waste but also enhances the overall efficacy of the waste treatment and enrichment process. The construction of a dedicated plant for this purpose has been completed, and commissioning activities started in 2007. The study concludes that such advancements signify a crucial step towards sustainable management of radioactive materials while addressing regulatory, safety, and local community concerns. This comprehensive approach illustrates the commitment to environmental stewardship within radiochemical production processes.
