Abstract

Language:

Three-phase fluidized beds have been applied successfully in wastewater treatment through bio-oxidation, utilizing various low to moderate density solid particles as support for microorganisms. This study investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics, including pressure drop, bed expansion, and phase hold-up, of a co-current gas-liquid-solid fluidized bed. An experimental setup using a 100 mm ID, 2m-high vertical Plexiglas column was developed, comprising three sections: gas-liquid disengagement, test section, and gas-liquid distributor. Air, water, and ceramic raschig rings served as the gas, liquid, and solid phases, respectively. By maintaining a constant gas velocity and varying liquid velocity, the effects on minimum liquid fluidization velocity, pressure drop, and expansion ratio were analyzed across different particle sizes and static bed heights. The findings aim to enhance understanding of gas-liquid and liquid-solid fluidization processes, with a focus on optimizing conditions for effective three-phase system performance in industrial applications.
