Abstract

Language:

Leaching operations combine both metallurgical and hydraulic processes to extract metals from the ore heap. The objective of this paper is to present hydraulic factors affecting the effectiveness of leaching operations and to discuss methodologies for assessing flow conditions in active and inactive heaps. The methodology involves a comprehensive evaluation of hydraulic factors through laboratory tests and development of a Leaching Index parameter to guide future designs. Results indicate that significant hydraulic factors include ore physical properties, variation in properties under heap loading, mineralogy, and heap heterogeneities, all of which impact solution flow. The findings emphasize the importance of considering hydraulic aspects in addition to the traditionally focused metallurgical ones, as neglecting these factors can lead to incomplete leaching and suboptimal metal recoveries. The paper also proposes a geophysical method for assessing fluid flow in heaps. This work aims to improve understanding and management of hydraulic processes in leaching operations, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency and metal recovery rates.
