Abstract

Language:

This policy brief presents findings and recommendations derived from the ENTITLE research project, aimed at highlighting the socio-environmental implications of mineral extraction in Bolivia, Chile, and Greece. The objective of this research is to contribute to policy debates and cultivate awareness around the developmental impacts associated with mining activities. Utilizing qualitative data collected from various extraction areas, the methodology involved assessing the social and environmental consequences of the mining boom driven by high demand and commodity prices, along with the state's role in regulation. Results indicate that while mining offers certain economic benefits, such as employment and investment, these fall short of compensating for the adverse social and environmental costs, which have intensified over the past decade. The brief points out that challenges remain in regulatory oversight and the management of relationships between mining firms and local communities, with existing governance gaps leading to widespread contestation of mining contracts and environmental degradation. Overall, the document proposes measures to ameliorate the developmental outcomes of mining practices, emphasizing the need for comprehensive stakeholder engagement and enhanced regulatory capacity.
