This report presents a comprehensive characterization of solar thermal concepts aimed at enhancing electricity generation, prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy under its Solar Thermal Technology Program. The objective of this research and development (R&D) initiative is to advance the scientific and engineering understanding of solar thermal technology and to establish a technology base that enables private industry to explore solar thermal power production options in a competitive energy market. Methodologically, the study analyzes various solar thermal concepts using tracking mirrors or lenses to concentrate solar radiation onto receivers where solar energy is absorbed and converted into heat for electricity generation. Through systematic examination of these technologies, the report identifies key findings and insights that can facilitate the integration of solar thermal systems into the energy infrastructure. Results indicate that leveraging solar thermal technology could significantly contribute to the diversity and sustainability of energy sources available for electricity generation. This report serves as a critical resource for stakeholders in the energy sector looking to implement solar thermal technologies in their operations.
