The copper smelting industry has transitioned into the 21st century compliant with environmental regulations, new smelter installations, and brown field expansions. This study aims to address the emerging challenges in the industry as copper concentrate grades decline and contained impurities increase. A new benchmarking survey was conducted to update the previous survey from 2016 on operating copper smelters worldwide. The data gathered were categorized based on primary smelting technology rather than geographical location, and further enriched with insights from published literature. The analysis discusses the unique applications of specialized process equipment within each smelting technology, alongside considerations of concentrate smelting capacity and impurity flexibility. Overall, the findings reveal significant trends and variations in the performance and adaptability of distinct smelting technologies, underscoring the dynamic nature of the copper smelting landscape and its implications for future operations.
