Platinum-group metals (PGMs) have become one of the most sought after rare metals in this modern age of science and they will continue to increase in importance as a result of their advantageous use in clean-air technology. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of ion exchange resins for the recovery of PGMs from hydrochloric acid solutions, a significant method given the increasing demand for these metals. A thorough analysis of various ion exchange systems and their performance metrics were conducted by reviewing existing literature and experimental studies. The findings indicate that certain resin types exhibit superior selectivity and capacity for PGMs, thus enhancing recovery rates. Moreover, operational parameters such as pH and resin type significantly affect the efficiency of the recovery process. The results underline the potential of optimally designed ion exchange systems to recover valuable PGMs from industrial effluents, contributing to sustainable practices in metal extraction and recycling. In conclusion, the use of ion exchange resins represents a promising approach to meeting the growing demand for platinum-group metals while addressing environmental concerns associated with their extraction.
