This paper provides preliminary results on the phosphorus speciation in basic oxygen furnace slag, which is rich in dicalcium silicates and has a phosphorus content that may hinder internal recycling within steel mills. The study highlights that chemical substitutions of [SiO4]2- and [PO4]3- occur not only in crystalline minerals but also in glass network formers where the crystallo-chemical parameters of both anions are closely related. The research focuses on the incorporation of P(V) into the dicalcium silicate polymorphs, which can lead to varying compositions that affect the reactivity and stability of the slag material. Eight samples weighing 1.7 tons each were collected from a French steel mill, prepared at the mill and further treated at BRGM to ensure a representative analysis. The findings reveal that BOF slag, which has limited recycling potential due to its free lime content and high phosphorus levels, could benefit from a better understanding of phosphorus speciation to improve its applications in road construction and internal recycling processes within the steel industry. The overall goal is to enhance the recycling rates of BOF slag and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions from steel production.
