This dissertation presents an in-depth electrochemical characterization of anode passivation mechanisms occurring during copper electrorefining. The objective of this study is to elucidate the factors influencing anode performance and their effects on the overall efficiency of the electrorefining process. To achieve this, a series of systematic electrochemical experiments were conducted to analyze the behavior of copper anodes under various operational conditions. The findings reveal that the formation of passivating films significantly impacts the electrochemical kinetics, leading to reduced current efficiency and increased energy consumption. Moreover, different additives were tested to mitigate passivation effects, demonstrating a promising avenue for enhancing copper recovery rates. The data collected provide valuable insights into the optimization of the electrorefining process, contributing to more sustainable practices in copper production. Overall, this research highlights the critical role of anode passivation in the electrorefining of copper and suggests potential strategies for improvement.
