Abstract

Language:

Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) includes mainly Zn, Fe, Pb, Ca and Mn-bearing compounds, classifying it as a hazardous waste. This research investigates the dissolution behavior of Zn- and Fe-bearing compounds in EAFD in nitric acid solutions. The compositions of ZnO, ZnFe2O4, and Fe2O3 in the EAFD were determined to be 28.58%, 37.96%, and 11.33%, respectively. Key parameters such as stirring speed, temperature, and HNO3 concentration were varied to assess their impact on the dissolution rates of these compounds. The findings indicate that ZnO dissolves rapidly, while the dissolution of ZnFe2O4 is enhanced by increasing temperature and HNO3 concentration. In contrast, Fe2O3 remains insoluble in 0.5 M HNO3 at 40 °C, but achieves complete dissolution in 4 M HNO3 at 80 °C. This study highlights the significance of optimizing leaching conditions, which could facilitate the recovery of valuable metals from EAFD, thereby aiding in waste management and contributing to environmental protection initiatives.
