Abstract

Language:

Substantial research in pyrometallurgy at the University of Pretoria started in 1980 with the appointment of Rian Dippenaar to the Iscor Chair. This paper reviews the main research themes over the quarter-century from 1980 to 2005, as well as some of the industrial developments that have shaped the research approach. The primary topics include the use of electrochemical sensors for equilibrium measurements, ilmenite smelting, steel processing, and reduction. It reflects on the evolution of pyrometallurgical activities within the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, highlighting the significance of training, teaching, development of students, and collaboration with industry in fostering academic success. The author asserts that the neglect of any one of these key elements could jeopardize the vitality of academic pyrometallurgy. In essence, this review encapsulates the integrated approach adopted in South Africa towards the discipline, which has been pivotal for its growth and sustainability.
