Barite is an important additive material used to increase the weight of excavation mud, and its particle sizes play a critical role in the effectiveness of the mud in drilling processes. This study aimed to analyze the effect of particle size gradation on the specific gravity and viscosity of barite powder employed in excavation mud formulations. Methodologically, the research was conducted through systematic experimentation where variations in the particle sizes corresponding to 200 and 325 mesh were evaluated. The results indicated that reducing the particle sizes slightly increased the specific gravity of the barite powder. Notably, it was found that larger particle sizes could decrease the density, although this effect may also introduce systematic errors in laboratory measurement conditions. The granulation of barite showed a significant influence on its viscosity, with dimensions below 325 mesh being notably effective. Consequently, excavating companies are found to utilize more barite powder when the specific gravity of the excavation mud decreases. Overall, this study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate barite particle sizes to manage both viscosity and density in excavation mud effectively.
