Abstract

Language:

The mining and metals sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, prompting stakeholders to demand accountability from the industry. This work examines the implications of poor fuel quality within mining operations, where contamination can lead to increased downtime and maintenance costs. The objective is to explore the transition from diesel fuel reliance towards alternative energy sources while addressing existing technological and economic constraints. Qualitative insights gathered from industry expert Robert Droogleever Fortuyn reveal that while mining companies are exploring new power technologies, immediate solutions, such as the FuelActive product, could enhance fuel efficiency and equipment uptime. Adopting such innovations presents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for mining operations in the short term. Despite potential benefits, challenges in widespread adoption by OEMs remain, highlighting the need for stronger integration of innovative technologies within mining equipment manufacturing processes. This study provides critical insight into the current state of fuel sourcing and technology adoption in the mining industry, underscoring the urgency for actionable strategies to mitigate environmental impact while sustaining operational efficiency.
