Humidity plays a critical role in the atmospheric corrosion of metals, significantly influencing the curing processes of coatings. This paper investigates the definitions, measurement methods, and effects of humidity and related factors, such as dew point, on corrosion susceptibility. By examining the relationship between humidity, temperature, and dew point, the study elucidates how these factors contribute to condensation and increased corrosion risk. Moreover, it analyzes variations in relative humidity across different sites in Australia throughout the year, providing a comprehensive overview of how environmental conditions impact corrosion rates. The findings suggest that corrosion can occur at much higher rates under humid conditions compared to dry ones, with a critical threshold of around 80 percent relative humidity identified as essential for corrosion progression. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding humidity levels for corrosion engineers and coating specifiers to mitigate potential corrosion damage effectively.
