Abstract

Language:

The process of flash smelting of nickel sulphide ores, as practised at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, is described. This study identifies critical variables in the operation of this process, highlighting their significant impact on performance. A pilot-scale, turbulent-jet flash reactor designed to model essential features of the industrial smelter is presented. The operation of this reactor and its application for investigating the ignition of particles of sulphide species are also reported. Factors such as the preheating of reaction air, temperature maintenance within the shaft, and effective dispersion and mixing of solids are essential for achieving satisfactory smelting conditions. Current insights into the ignition of reactive particles and the associated reactions provide a foundation for ongoing experimental research aimed at optimizing the flash smelting process. Results indicate that attention to these critical design and operation variables is paramount for both throughput and product quality, reinforcing the importance of this research in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of nickel extraction processes.
