Abstract

Language:

The Bureau of Mines has developed a process to improve the leaching kinetics of diffusion controlled systems. The system features the Bureau-developed turbomill, an attrition grinder which scrubs the reaction product coating away from the unreacted mineral grains during leaching. This method allows for continuous operation at any temperature up to the boiling point of the leaching agent. The research focuses on the dissolution of chalcopyrite with acidified ferric sulfate, forming a sulfur product on the unreacted chalcopyrite surface. This innovation serves as a hydrometallurgical alternative to traditional chalcopyrite smelter technology, effectively addressing sulfur dioxide emissions and their associated costs. Batch testing at 90°C demonstrated over 99% copper extraction from the chalcopyrite/ferric sulfate system, achieving optimal energy consumption of 1,520 kWh/st while extracting 95% of the copper. Ongoing research aims at developing a continuous system and solvent extraction/electrowinning treatment of the resulting pregnant liquor from the chalcopyrite/ferric sulfate leach.
