Abstract

Language:

In France, the industrial reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel entails dissolving irradiated fuel in concentrated nitric media to facilitate the recycling and separation of uranium and plutonium. As the demand for sustainable nuclear energy grows, it becomes essential to address issues related to waste and effluent management. This study aims to explore the efficacy of high-power ultrasound in controlling and stabilizing the oxidation states of plutonium (Pu) in aqueous nitric solutions. To this end, aqueous solutions of Pu(III), Pu(IV), and Pu(VI) were subjected to 20 kHz ultrasound irradiation under an argon atmosphere. Conducted at the Atalante facility in a temperature-controlled glove box, the experiments utilized a calorimetric method to assess the acoustic power delivered to the solutions. The behavior of the sonicated Pu solutions, monitored using a UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer, provided insights into the redox reactions occurring within the solutions. The results indicate significant changes in the oxidation states of Pu under ultrasound irradiation, suggesting a promising avenue for enhancing the treatment of spent nuclear fuel through sonochemical methods.
