This paper evaluates the performance of a passive, mixed‑mode solar dryer designed and constructed from locally available materials in Enugu, Nigeria. The system consists of a solar air heater (collector), a wooden drying cabinet with three perforated metal trays, and insulated ducts, operating by natural convection without moving parts. Experimental tests were carried out in November 2020 using 20 mm and 40 mm cassava slices, with temperatures recorded in the ambient, collector, and drying chamber over two consecutive days. Moisture content and drying rate were determined on both wet and dry bases, and temperature–time and moisture–time relationships were plotted. The dryer removed 112 g and 105 g of water on the first and second days, respectively, with collector and overall dryer efficiencies of 37.9% and 37.6%. Final moisture contents ranged from 38.8% to 53.03% (20 mm slices) and 64.6% to 112.9% (40 mm slices), with drying rates of 27.0 g/h and 34.0 g/h corresponding to 62.1% and 68% drying for the first and second days. The results indicate a significant improvement over traditional open sun drying and demonstrate the dryer’s suitability as both a practical crop‑drying solution and an educational tool for heat and mass transfer studies.
