This study explores the critical roles that laboratory information management systems (LIMS) play in successfully conducting multi-site genetics studies in Africa. The objective is to identify the challenges faced by researchers in utilizing LIMS and the potential opportunities for up-scaling these systems to enhance research efficiency and data management across diverse institutions. A comprehensive methodology was employed, wherein qualitative data was gathered through interviews with stakeholders from various operational sites, supplemented by a review of relevant literature. The results indicate significant challenges such as infrastructure limitations, lack of standardized protocols, and insufficient training among personnel. However, the study also highlights promising opportunities, including the potential for LIMS to streamline data collection processes, improve specimen tracking, and facilitate collaboration between research groups. The findings emphasize the necessity of investing in robust LIMS infrastructures and training programs to address the identified challenges, thereby maximizing the impact of genetics research in Africa. Through strategic enhancements to LIMS, the research landscape can become more efficient and integrated, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes in the region.
