Abstract

Language:

A mixed culture of A. ferrooxidans and A. thiooxidans isolated from a coal gangue dump was used to bioleach coal gangue in a column reactor to investigate the leaching of elements. The changes of metal ions (Fe, Mn and Cr) and sulfate in the leaching process were monitored to assess the efficiency of the bioleaching process. Experimental results revealed that the mixed culture significantly enhanced the leaching of valuable metals compared to individual cultures. This study provides valuable insights into the potential application of bioleaching technology for the bioremediation of coal gangue and suggests that a mixed culture approach may offer advantages in terms of metal recovery. These findings contribute to the understanding of microbial interactions in bioleaching systems and emphasize the importance of selecting appropriate microbial consortia for effective metal extraction. Overall, this research highlights the promising role of bioleaching in sustainable resource recovery from industrial waste materials.
