The gradual depletion of high-grade iron ores has necessitated the exploitation of low/off grade iron ore reserves in India. This study aims to characterize the mineralogy and geochemistry of low-grade iron ore from the Bellary-Hospet sector to inform beneficiation processes. Detailed investigations were conducted using microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Results reveal that hematite is the predominant iron oxide, accompanied by minor quantities of goethite, magnetite, martite, and limonite, with quartz and clay as main gangue components. Notably, iron silicate and iron carbonate minerals were absent, with only trace pyrite observed. Microscopy showed that quartz typically occurs as inclusions within hematite and magnetite grains. XRD analysis confirmed hematite as the dominant mineral, with goethite, quartz, and kaolinite present in lesser amounts. Quantitative EPMA and qualitative mapping identified gibbsite as the exclusive alumina-bearing phase and apatite for phosphorus. This comprehensive geochemical evaluation of 47 representative iron ore samples sheds light on the contributions of silica and alumina phases, highlighting intricate relationships among mineral constituents vital for process flow sheet development.
