Abstract

Language:

Calcium (Ca) additions during secondary steelmaking are a well-adopted practice to transform solid oxide non-metallic inclusions (NMIs) into globular-shaped liquid oxides. This study explores the impact of varying Ca additions on NMIs in low-alloyed Ca-treated steel grades with the aim of establishing a more responsive approach to Ca treatment. The methodology involved online monitoring of NMIs state coupled with controlled variations in Ca addition, observing its effects on NMIs state transformations. Results show that optimal CaSi wire additions significantly improve steel castability and reduce submerged entry nozzle (SEN) clogging tendencies by 30 pct. The implications of the data-driven optimizer ‘ClogCalc’ highlight its potential benefits for steel manufacturers, offering new insights into enhancing Ca treatment efficiency.
