Natural river sand (NRS) is the primary fine aggregate used in construction, but its supply is diminishing due to bans implemented in regions such as Maharashtra and Rajasthan. This necessitates the exploration of alternative materials to replace NRS in mortar to promote sustainability in the construction industry. This review paper investigates the potential of various industrial and mining wastes, such as granite dust, marble powder, recycled masonry aggregate, and recycled high impact polystyrene, as viable substitutes for NRS. The goal is to ensure that the substitution does not compromise the strength and properties of the mortar. A comprehensive review of existing research studies is presented, highlighting positive outcomes associated with the replacement of NRS with these alternative materials. The findings suggest that further research and application of these alternatives are vital for advancing sustainable practices in the construction sector. This research underscores the importance of utilizing waste materials for more eco-friendly construction methodologies, thereby addressing both environmental and resource depletion concerns.
