Abstract

Language:

This document outlines the objectives and detailed contents of the PC4306 Physical Metallurgy course, which aims to teach students about the principles of alloy design, phase diagrams, and the strengthening mechanisms in various metals and alloys. The course content is structured into four modules, covering important topics such as phase changes in unary and binary systems, solidification mechanisms, conventional heat treatment processes, and a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Special attention is given to the influence of heat treatment on material properties, as well as the phenomena of solid-state transformations, including age hardening and martensitic changes. The course also emphasizes the significance of grain size and boundary effects on the strength and toughness of alloys, supported by discussions on the Hall-Petch equation. By engaging with these fundamental concepts, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of physical metallurgy, enabling them to apply this knowledge in engineering contexts.
