This paper addresses critical questions regarding subsurface contaminant transport at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), particularly focusing on travel times to the aquifer and modes of contaminant transport influenced by sorption processes. The study emphasizes the hydraulic and geochemical framework of the vadose zone and aquifer, characterized by significant heterogeneity due to interbedded basalts and sediments. Key hydraulic issues discussed include diverse flow pathways, anisotropy, preferential flow, and periods of saturation or perching. On the geochemical side, major concerns are related to contaminant mobility affected by redox conditions and the speciation of contaminants such as actinides, in addition to the presence of organic and inorganic complexing solutes. The potential for colloid transport is highlighted, challenging conventional transport concepts. This comprehensive review aims to provide insights that not only apply to the specific studies at INEEL but also to similar sites, capturing the essence of hydraulic and geochemical interactions in the region.
