The HydroCopperTM process, developed by Outokumpu Technology, introduces a novel chloride leaching method for the efficient treatment of copper sulphide concentrates directly at the mine site, aiming to enhance copper production and facilitate the utilization of low-grade ores. This study investigates the feasibility of the HydroCopperTM technology, which not only allows for the extraction of high-quality copper products such as wire rod and bars but also enables the simultaneous recovery of gold from various sulphidic concentrates. A demonstration plant was constructed in Pori, Finland, with a capacity of processing one metric ton of copper daily, and served as a testbed for validating the process. Results from the initial tests with Pyhäsalmi and Erdenet copper concentrates in 2003 and 2004 indicate successful metal recovery and the viability of the HydroCopperTM method compared to traditional smelting and heap leaching techniques. Overall, this innovative approach holds substantial promise for addressing the challenges faced by copper producers in economically marginal mining scenarios.
