Over the past decade, there has been considerable increase in the use of electromagnetic devices for a variety of applications in the aluminium cast house. This paper aims to discuss some of the history of these devices, their uses in the cast house, and the benefits they can bring today to the cast house operation in all segments of the aluminium industry from the primary cast house through to the aluminium recycling operation. Today, there are a variety of devices available to aluminium operators in many aspects of the cast house operation from stirring, pumping, transfer, etc. There are, however, many other operational activities that can be enhanced within the cast house through the application of electromagnetic pumping, and this paper wishes to provide some insight into these activities and discuss some preliminary operational results in this area. Finally, the paper will look at the cost benefits of investing in such technologies and analyse when such investment is or is not practical.
