Abstract

Language:

This report outlines the experimental approach taken by SCK•CEN from 2007 to 2013 in developing sorption parameters for radionuclides in Boom Clay. The objective was to establish reliable data on radionuclide migration and retention properties in this geological formation, which is critical for the safe disposal of nuclear waste. A comprehensive methodology was deployed, incorporating batch experiments to assess the ion exchange properties, surface complexation, and adsorption isotherms of radionuclides in interaction with Boom Clay. Ongoing modeling efforts were combined with empirical data to improve the predictive capability of radionuclide behavior in the geological environment. The results include determined values for exchange capacities, selectivity coefficients, and complexation constants, which are pivotal for understanding radionuclide interactions and assessing long-term safety in geological disposal sites. This work contributes to the broader field of nuclear waste management and environmental safety regarding underground disposal strategies.
