This study investigates the arsenate retention mechanisms on hematite with various morphologies, including lenticular, ellipsoidal, and flat tubular particles, which were precipitated from ferric nitrate solutions in the presence of minor amounts of aluminum, silicon, magnesium, and organic acids such as oxalic, citric, and tartaric. The identification of particle shapes was accomplished using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The adsorption of arsenate onto these hematite morphologies was evaluated using vibrational spectroscopy techniques to understand the interaction and binding mechanisms. The results indicate distinct differences in the retention capabilities of arsenate based on the morphology of hematite, highlighting the influence of particle structure on adsorption efficiency. This research provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of arsenate retention, which can be crucial for environmental remediation efforts involving metal and arsenic contaminants in soils and groundwater. The findings also contribute to a better understanding of how varying hematite morphologies affect chemical interactions in environmental contexts.
